Leaving Indonesia
Well, we’ve checked out of Indonesia from the Nongsa Point Marina on Batam Island across from Singapore and we’ve anchored off a little islet about a mile from the marina. I’m in company with Seadrive, Askari and a French boat called Archibald. Archibald is crewed by a young couple of doctors and their three lovely children. Its great fun to have kids running crazy around us! At dawn tomorrow, we’ll be heading across four shipping lanes to reach Singapore. Its hard to describe the sight of 50 or more freightors and tankers cruising along at any one time. At night its like a light show! Since the Indonesian Customs people wouldn’t show up till about 10:00am to check us out of Indonesia, we had to check out in the afternoon and anchor off this islet for the night. We have 40 miles of tanker dodging to go through tomorrow before we reach Raffles Marina in Singapore. I’m the slowest in the group by far so it’ll be most interesting for me! Indonesia is a beautiful country with very friendly people. The country as a whole has suffered a lot from the few people involved with the Bali bombings. Tourism has all but dried up and many are out of work. Singapore is going to be a totally different experience and I’m looking forward to a couple of weeks in a first world country again!
