It’s Your Liveaboard Community-get involved!

Shilshole Marina has 350 authorized liveaboard boats that contain 700+ individuals, making it one of the largest liveaboard communities on the West Coast!  It is a unique and treasured way of life, but there are government agencies looking to regulate how we use our recreational boats and, over the years, there have been many challenges to our liveaboard lifestyle.

Your Shilshole Liveaboard Assoc (SLA) represents these liveaboards here at Shilshole.  We are liaisons between the Port of Seattle/Shilshole Marina and the liveaboards in the marina.  Our goal is to have clear and consistent communication with the Port; to represent the liveaboards at Port meetings; to organize activities and events that enhance the liveaboard family lifestyle; and to negotiate any agreements that the Port/Marina propose.

There are several ways to get involved….

  1. consider joining the board and being part of the discussion/process
  2. attend the Ballard District Council Meetings and add your voice (the SLA holds a permanent seat on our Ballard Council)
  3. participate in the “Deck Your Hulls” and “Marina Days” events
  4. attend the Dock Captain/Port quarterly meetings (all tenants are always welcome). Next one is Sept 10, 6pm, at CYC clubhouse V-dock
  5. attend the Marina Restroom/Laundry/Parking/Bus update meetings-watch for notices on the gates and on this site
  6. and…simply read/post/comment on this blog on a regular basis

National Night Out-Shilshole

A big thank you to the Port of Seattle Police for their 17th annual National Night Out BBQ this evening.  It was a chance to mingle with the officers and their K9 companions, and the perfect weather and great food made for a fun family evening on the Plaza.  And, thank you to the Marina Staff for organizing all of this!

Hit and Run Boating Collisions in Marinas

We have all seen the boaters that, due to their lack of experience, wind conditions or their flippant attitude of “they just don’t give a sh…t”, crash their boats into the neighbors while maneuvering in the the marina and then leave the scene of the accident.  Well… in the state of Washington, hit and run penalties can be…

  • “a class B felony can result in a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison and $20,000 fine; a class C felony can result in a maximum penalty of 5 years in prison and $10,000 fine.”

Obviously, we would all do our best to help that boater out of their predicament and if it’s a “no harm, no foul”, all the better but, if it’s something worse (boats are hit, damage is done to the dock), it is something we should all be concerned with.

If you have the fore-site to capture the accident on video or picture, please contact the Port office immediately!  The Port Police, Seattle Police and the US Coast Guard all have jurisdiction over accidents in Shilshole Marina and pictures are invaluable when it comes to holding that boater responsible for insurance or legal reasons.

West Point Treatment Plant dumps raw sewage into Sound

A Seattle City Light power surge and outage that affected more than 10,000 customers in Seattle led to a brief emergency bypass at the West Point Treatment Plant early Friday morning, July 19.

The power disruption caused pumping throughout the wastewater treatment plant to shut down. Workers acted swiftly to prevent flooding in the plant by sending an estimated 3 million gallons of storm water mixed with wastewater into Puget Sound through an emergency outfall pipe for 27 minutes, and normal operations were quickly restored.

Unsolicited email…

Some of you may have received an email from a person that got your name from what he called the Shilshole “authorized” live-aboard list asking about boat sitting, sublet or possibly marketing his charter business. There is NO authorized live-aboard or non liveaboard tenant list that exists.

What you do to sublet your slip is between you and the Port of Seattle/Shilshole Marina.

If you put your name on a Google Docs email list that is public information for all to see, that is most likely where your information came from.  Just be cautious replying to unsolicited emails.

Crab Season shortened

This year’s Puget Sound Dungeness Crab season is open Thursdays through Mondays, July 4 – Aug. 3.  If you are going north, then the season extends into September.  You can get your license at Fred Meyer or online, and be sure to read the regulations and follow them…the Fish and Game Wardens are actively patrolling the area, even if you don’t see them.

City Council Candidates Forum-Nordic Museum

Here’s your chance to interact with community members and hear in person from candidates on a wide range of issues for this important local election. The Seattle City Council primary election is August 6.

Seattle City Council District 6 encompasses the greater Ballard area, as well as Green Lake, Phinney Ridge, Fremont, and part of Greenwood. This panel will cover at-large issues as well as providing focus on Ballard-specific topics.
