Effective May 10th , 2018, Puget Sound has now been declared a No-Discharge Zone.
It has been illegal since the 1972 Clean Water Act to discharge untreated sewage (black water) into coastal waters. Over the years, there have been a couple ways for boaters to legally treat raw sewage before discharging, but most boaters contain all their sewage in a holding tank (Type III) and utilize a pumpout station.
Now, all sewage must be contained and be pumped at a pumpout station. If your boat has a toilet on board, you are required to have a marine sanitation device (MSD). For further details, please see the Dept of Ecology’s site.
Gray water (sinks/showers) discharge is still allowed.
Last evening was our annual meeting at CYC, which was a chance for all liveaboards at Shilshole to meet their representatives. There were about 65 attendees at the hour long meeting that reviewed the current issues affecting us, as liveaboards here at Shilshole.
Al Hughes reviewed the history of the Assoc. and the most recent liveaboard agreement negotiations with the Port; Brianne discussed the goals and focus of our collective community involvement and Kristen encouraged everyone to participate in the V-man VHF radio check-in on Monday nights and to get involved with our Shilshole Prepares–emergency preparedness at Shilshole.

If you are an authorized Liveaboard at Shilshole Marina, you are invited to attend our annual Shilshole Liveaboard Assoc. meeting, Tues., April 3rd, 7-8 pm at the CYC clubhouse.
Topics covered will be the recent Liveaboard Agreement with the Port, potential parking lot design, Shilshole Prepares (emergency prep for our Shilshole community), and the election of new board members. This is your opportunity to participate in your liveaboard community.
Last evening was the quarterly meeting where Shilshole Marina/Port of Seattle shares with the Dock Captains/moorage tenants the latest security and construction updates. Here are some notes…
There’s a meeting scheduled for Thursday, March 22 at 7 pm in the Sunset Room of Sunset West Condos. One or two trip planners from Metro will be there plus Jeanne Kohls-Wells & John Fowler. We have collected over 100 signatures from marina folks (thanks to Dockside Solutions & Seattle Sailing Club).
With limited parking in the marina and on the street during busy weekends; with high school kids having to walk 1.2 miles to the nearest bus stop in the dark in winter months; and with the city’s growing congestion and expense for parking-more people would like to downsize a vehicle and/or ride a bus if they could get to where they need to go without using a car!
Here’s your chance to show Metro that there is indeed interest for bus service here at Shilshole! Please stop by Dockside Solutions in the Marina Office building to sign a petition for bus service.

There will be a Sound Transit light rail open house in Ballard on February 15, from 6:30 to 8:30 at the Leif Erikson Lodge, 2245 NW 57th. We’re reminding everyone that it is important to attend if you have opinions on the current design. It is based on an elevated track along 15th after crossing the Ship Canal on a lift bridge. An elevated station similar to what is being built at Northgate is intended for the vicinity of Market Street. Bring those opinions. Decisions now will influence the character of Ballard for the next century.
