Memorial Day weekend is the Swiftsure International Yacht Race in Victoria. This is a long-time northwest favorite with a great history! It can be a “driftsure” or blow like stink yet everyone wants to go back the next year. There are many boats from Shilshole that participate so be sure to wish them luck as you see them get ready to leave and welcome them back on Monday. It can be a grueling race that tests the skill, nerves and patience of even the best.
Here are some links about the history, registered boats, and on their site, you may find a race tracker link (wasn’t available at time of post), where you can follow the progress …
Norwegian Constitution Day is the official National Day of Norway, celebrated on the 17th of May. Among Norwegians, the day is referred to simply as “Syttende Mai” (17th of May) or Grunnlovsdagen (The Constitution Day).
The parade begins at the corner of NW 62nd and 24th Avenue NW. The route follows south to Market Street and eastward to Bergen Place park, then turns right onto 22nd and continues south down Ballard Avenue and ends at Lone St.
The boats have started to arrive at Bell Harbor. There are tours and info about participating. The parade of boats for the next start on May 3rd is worth the boat trip over to watch!
“With no previous sailing experience necessary, before signing up for the intensive training programme, it’s a record-breaking 40,000 nautical mile race around the world on a 70-foot ocean racing yacht.“

The Port landscaping crew met with the Shilshole Liveaboard Association last week to express her concerns about the increase in dog feces in the garden beds. She has worked diligently to update and maintain the beds after several years of neglect during the Covid lockdown. It’s not all dog owners, but the few who fail to clean up after their dog-whether on the docks or in the gardens.
She is asking that dog owners please be more cognizant of picking up their pet’s waste and the effect it has on the environment and health and safety of other pets and humans.
Here are her 7 Reasons to scoop your pup’s poop…
Reminder…Seaview Ave at the Railroad Bridge will be closed, 8-5 this Friday, the 16th. It appears they are doing track work. Use Golden Gardens Dr. or take a left just past the bike trail/stoplight.
Good evening, neighbors and thank you to those that checked in. Here is a brief summary of tonight’s Port “Teams” call…
First…there were only 61 attendees out of all of Shilshole (1400 slips), Harbor Island (77 slips), Fishermen’s Terminal (700 slips) and Salmon Bay Marina (168 slips). If you are not getting the emails from the marina office, maybe they don’t have your current info. Please update your contact info with them.
2nd…the Sealions have caused severe damage to the docks and equipment. The Port is working with the appropriate agencies to mitigate their effect. It has been determined the sealions are color blind so yellow caution tape doesn’t work. Use blue or green tape, cones etc…it seems to deter them. They apparently don’t like a stream of water spray, either. If you hear of explosives being used (as some fishermen have been observed doing), contact the office immediately.
3- the tribal dock (and yellow crane/hoist) at the south end near Seaview has piling structural issues which is why it has limited access and will be restricted for a long time
4-one more blue light camera has been ordered to be installed by the dry storage at the north end. The cameras have proven to be a deterrent and reported incidents are down. As always, report anyone/anything suspicious and call 911 for any safety concerns.
5-The management requests that if you see any activity by the marina staff or security staff that is of concern, please report it to the marina manager, Karlina Smith
6-the laundry facilities have notices posted as to how to contact the administrator of the laundry (not the Port). Please report any issues immediately. The company has parts on backorder, etc so they will be here as soon as possible.
7-the Port is working with the City of Seattle and Seattle Police to facilitate the tagging and removal of the transient vehicles on Seaview. The City has a FinditFixit app to report any issues or concerns.
Thanks all for being great neighbors and watching out for each other…
This coming Wednesday. Please check your email from the Port on 1-11-24 for the call link.

Shilshole Marina has had a handbook for it’s tenants for over 20 years and it was supposed to be handed out to every new tenant by the office. Unfortunately, that was hit or miss, according to our neighbors.
They finally put it online and it now incorporates all marina policies-parking, waste disposal, Required Best Management Practices, and subleasing. Please take the time to read it and be familiar the marina procedures-it may answer many of your questions. It can always be found under the “More Info” tab above.

The Shilshole Liveaboard Assoc. (SLA) is a neighborhood association, that was formed to serve as a conduit for sharing experience, education, and information between people living aboard their recreational boats at Shilshole and their larger community.
The SLA has a close working relationship with the Marina/Port of Seattle; manages the Shilshole Blog, the Dock Captain Program, Shilshole Prepares, and maintains a permanent seat on the Ballard District Council.
The SLA also acts as the representative of our liveaboard community on issues that are a concern to the membership like: marina security, the Liveaboard Agreement with the Port, and community participation. In order to accomplish this, we need to hear from you! Together we can protect our lifestyle and the use of our recreational boats.
