A White Christmas

A week ahead of time, the weather forecast didn’t predict a White Christmas. Instead, it would be rain and mild temperatures. That changed two days before Christmas with a cold blast from the north. On Christmas Eve day, it snowed and stuck!

With his reindeers, Santa must have plotted a course to the Marina using that snow-flake version of water. Look at how he filled my stocking!

Best of all, he brought my family together for the holidays. Thank you Santa.

Argosy Christmas Ship

The beach at Golden Gardens Park was filled with people on Saturday to watch the Argosy Christmas ship. There were bonfires in the fire pits, children running along the shoreline, and lots of hot beverages. At sunset, against a crimson sky of broken clouds, the Argosy ship was greeted by lighted boats from Shilshole Bay Marina. The choir’s singing was broadcasted on mega-speakers for twenty minutes. I think this event is a jewel of Seattle’s holiday celebrations.

Bubbles

As I came home to Shilshole today, the sun broke out of the clouds.

I stopped at Golden Gardens for a walk. By the bath-house,  I saw a man standing in front of a 5 gallon bucket.  I heard him tell a passer-by a recipe. The ingredients of the recipe were the following.

  1. 6 cups water.
  2. 1/2 cup blue Dawn dish detergent.
  3. 1/2 cup corn starch.
  4. 1 tbsp. baking powder.
  5. 1 tbsp. glycerin.

After telling the recipe, I watched the man dipped two sticks into the 5 gallon bucket.  He  produced sheer delight to the children around him. (Click on the link below to download and view the video.)

Halloween

What a treat Halloween was this year!

It was a beautiful evening.

Around 6 pm, Shilshole’s kids gathered at the Harbor Master’s office.

As the sun set, they went from dock to dock.

Their costumes were adorable and their energy was sweet. Thanks kids for all the fun!

Reaching out to help…

If any of you know of anyone who needs help.. suffering from depression, drug, or alcohol addiction or other serious mental or emotional problem, I’d like to point out some easy to access resources.

There as a weekly AA meeting right here at the marina, offering support and fellowship for those who would like to stop drinking or using. Stop by the marina conference room any Monday morning from 7 to 8 am and check it out.

The King County Crisis Line 866-4-CRISIS is a great resource if a person needs immediate help. They can help with any problem small or large.

If we see any of our neighbors suffering please reach out to them and help them find help before something serous happens.

If you’d like to talk to someone in confidence, you can feel free to contact me at 206-979-9016.

Volunteer need to head up the Live Aboard Tour National Marina Day June 10, 2017

For the last two years the crew of S/V Bristol Blue (Ned Kohlhauff and Kristen Sierra) has headed up this activity. Due to several other commitments they will not be available to this year.

This event is sponsored by the Shilshole LiveAboard Association. If you live on a boat here a Shilshole Marina you are a member. The tour consists of volunteers that are willing to show their boats to the general public 12 noon to 4 pm on June 10 2017. Rounding up 3-4 other liveaboard boats to participate in the tour is the primary responsibility of the tour volunteer. Attending a couple of meetings with the Port of Seattle staff involved with putting on this event and getting the other tour volunteers to sign a release of harm document for each boat is also included.

If you are interesting in volunteering for this event you can call or email Kristen Sierra 206-890-5756 amazonred53@gmail.com

Posts to the Blog

Hello Fellow Boaters,

It may have come to your attention that our blog postings has slowed to a near stop. While it is the season to take a trip away from the dock and we have fewer folks around the Marina some of us have been just run out of time and ideas.   I am speaking for myself at this moment.  I would really like to see more posts, if you value the blog as means of communication please join in.  This site sat dormant for along time, years in fact.

Please post.  You can tell about a recent experience, ideas and even questions.

By the way, Shilshole Prepares has had a major  shift in the force behind it in the last month.  Jim Doub has moved to Edmonds Marina with his lovely Sharon.  He has a few days a month here at Shilshole while his liveaboard status is confirmed at Edmonds, but he felt it was time to let others take over the program he helped to shape and care for.  If you know Jim then you know he is a hard man to keep up with.  The quality of his work and his heart will be sorely missed.  Thank you, Jim for all that you did to keep us prepared.

The Liveaboard Association’s Board has assumed the task of maintaining the Shilshole Prepares page of the Shilshole Blog.  Meetings with City of Seattle and other agencies, up dates and drill as well as information will handled by the various board members, however we could use some additional people to help out.

Volunteering is a little like orienteering  there are obstacles, but please don’t that worry you.  It is worth it and you might even have fun!
