The Port landscaping crew met with the Shilshole Liveaboard Association last week to express her concerns about the increase in dog feces in the garden beds. She has worked diligently to update and maintain the beds after several years of neglect during the Covid lockdown. It’s not all dog owners, but the few who fail to clean up after their dog-whether on the docks or in the gardens.

She is asking that dog owners please be more cognizant of picking up their pet’s waste and the effect it has on the environment and health and safety of other pets and humans.

Here are her 7 Reasons to scoop your pup’s poop…

1. Damage to local water tables (with the help of rain and snow, dog waste will leech into local water supplies and will have a negative effect on wildlife and aquatic vegetation)
2. Exposure to disease (dog feces contains harmful microorganisms like
   E Coli and Salmonella, in addition to a common and devastating canine virus called parvovirus)
3. Parasites (tapeworm, roundworm, hookworm live in the intestines of animals, leaving poop in beds can transfer parasites in the soil which could infect me and other workers)
4. Toxicity (dog urine and feces contains toxins and eventually will harm or kill plants, and makes it difficult to maintain the landscape beds)
5. Reduces beautification (the dog owner and dog traffic eventually kill plants. Last autumn, 85 percent of newly installed plants died because of the constant foot traffic)
6. Pests (large amount of waste will attract mice and rats, (we don’t want to encourage this situation)
7. Your neighbors and Public (be kind, do good for not only your furry friend but for your neighbor, general public and environment)

Reminder…Seaview Ave at the Railroad Bridge will be closed, 8-5 this Friday, the 16th. It appears they are doing track work. Use Golden Gardens Dr. or take a left just past the bike trail/stoplight.

Good evening, neighbors and thank you to those that checked in. Here is a brief summary of tonight’s Port “Teams” call…

First…there were only 61 attendees out of all of Shilshole (1400 slips), Harbor Island (77 slips), Fishermen’s Terminal (700 slips) and Salmon Bay Marina (168 slips). If you are not getting the emails from the marina office, maybe they don’t have your current info. Please update your contact info with them.

2nd…the Sealions have caused severe damage to the docks and equipment. The Port is working with the appropriate agencies to mitigate their effect. It has been determined the sealions are color blind so yellow caution tape doesn’t work. Use blue or green tape, cones etc…it seems to deter them. They apparently don’t like a stream of water spray, either. If you hear of explosives being used (as some fishermen have been observed doing), contact the office immediately.

3- the tribal dock (and yellow crane/hoist) at the south end near Seaview has piling structural issues which is why it has limited access and will be restricted for a long time

4-one more blue light camera has been ordered to be installed by the dry storage at the north end. The cameras have proven to be a deterrent and reported incidents are down. As always, report anyone/anything suspicious and call 911 for any safety concerns.

5-The management requests that if you see any activity by the marina staff or security staff that is of concern, please report it to the marina manager, Karlina Smith

6-the laundry facilities have notices posted as to how to contact the administrator of the laundry (not the Port). Please report any issues immediately. The company has parts on backorder, etc so they will be here as soon as possible.

7-the Port is working with the City of Seattle and Seattle Police to facilitate the tagging and removal of the transient vehicles on Seaview. The City has a FinditFixit app to report any issues or concerns.

Shilshole Marina has had a handbook for it’s tenants for over 20 years and it was supposed to be handed out to every new tenant by the office.  Unfortunately, that was hit or miss, according to our neighbors.

They finally put it online and it now incorporates all marina policies-parking, waste disposal, Required Best Management Practices, and subleasing.  Please take the time to read it and be familiar the marina procedures-it may answer many of your questions.  It can always be found under the “More Info” tab above.
