Our Boaters Advocate..RBAW

We have an organization here in Washington that was formed in 1957 to support and advocate for the recreational boating community:  RBAW-Recreational Boating Association of Washington.  They first acquired Sucia Island for boaters to prevent it from being commercially developed and they recently helped acquire Lakebay Marina (at Penrose Pt. State Park in South Sound).  They have been instrumental in keeping boater registration fees and taxes affordable.

As you know, the City of Seattle has dramatically cut the Police force and with it, the Harbor Patrol.  These are the officers that are usually first on the scene in the case of a fire or sinking.  Please check out the RBAW site for more details and how you can help.  (a link to RBAW can always be found on the right side of this Blog).

Crime stats for 11/9/21- 11/15/21

Hope you guys all survived the windy weather this week. Happy to report no significant incidents this week. These are the smallest numbers we’ve seen in months. Lets hope this trend continues.

Crime stats from Port of Seattle Police for Shilshole Marina via Officer Shin on the Monday night VMan Net:

11/09/21-11/15/21
16 Area checks*
1 Vehicle check
17 total Checks
*Area checks are when officers self dispatch to an area to make sure nothing is going on and provide a presence.
Be sure to join in the VMan net on Monday nights at 8pm VHF channel 71. The Port of Seattle Police are once again participating in the net and willing to answer questions. Tenants are encouraged to stay vigilant & report ANY suspicious activity to the Port of Seattle Police.

Some Reminders…

  • The Port has a great haz-mat recycling program! Just call the 24/7 cell to have them meet you so they can dispose of your items:
    • Only used oil, diesel and hydraulic fluid goes in tank near restroom M2;
    • Used batteries, old gasoline/mix, and antifreeze/coolant go to the Hazmat Box down near Seaview Boatyard (south)
  • Garbage goes in the dark green waste container, all recycling goes in the large blue container. Compost in the brown plastic bin.
  • Please put your donated “junk” (items you no longer need but don’t want to toss) near the dumpster and not at the gate, so more people can see them.
  • Remind your guests and crew to park on the outer row near the street in General Parking. The Port will tow all vehicles that are parked in Permit Parking that don’t have a 2021 sticker.
  • Please control your dogs (by your side or on a leash at all times) and please clean up after them!
  • To avoid smash and grab car break-ins, do not leave any items visible in your car.
  • Do not allow people you don’t know through the gate (tailgaters). Have them call the Port number posted on the gate for access.  There have been prowlers on the docks and in the waterways so please lock your boat, dinghy, etc and please call the Port’s 24/7 cell phone, 206-601-4089, if you see anything/anyone suspicious.

There’s a storm a-brewin…

As has been forecast for a week and now is all over the news, one of the largest low-pressure storms ever recorded in this area is winding up in the north pacific and is expected to hit the Washington coast Sunday.

It goes without saying, every fall/winter…prepare your boat and check on your neighbors.

  • Secure your halyards away from your mast to prevent slapping in the wind.
  • Remove flags
  • Put out extra dock lines and fenders.
  • Secure tarps, sail covers and roller furling.
  • Securely stow the gear on your boat, steps & items behind your dock box, and bail your dinghy!
  • Make sure your power cord has slack in it and that it is not hanging in the water!
  • Water lines may freeze or be shut off…take appropriate action (top off tanks, disconnect hoses, etc.)
  • Contact the Marina staff right away if you see anything of concern (ie: loose sails, frayed dock lines, continuous bilge pump running and any diesel/oil spills).
