SLA Winter Party at CYC

The Shilshole Liveaboard Association put together a great little Winter Party at the Corinthian Yacht Club.  Of course, there was a fine cruiser potluck, and I was thrilled to see a good turn-out from O-dock. With a fun Monty Python theme, Kristen and her crew decorated with banners, spam and mini-grails, and even a entry drawbridge. We had live music, good camaraderie, and even a silly walk. It was a small Winter turn-out, and with only one loved child, so she got most of the pics. What a good fun evening! Hope you can come next time – thanks all!  see pics here…

Emergency Preparedness

Last night there was a presentation at CYC from the City of Seattle Dept of Emergency Preparation.  About 30 marina residents and a couple Sunset West condo residents attended and were given an overview of what to do to prepare yourself for a major earthquake here at Shilshole.  Tsunamis are what most people think of, but with the location of Shilshole this far down the Salish Sea, we most likely will see a surge or higher than normal water levels-no crashing rolling tsunami wave.

Ship Canal Bridges Extended Closures

The Coast Guard has issued a temporary deviation from the operating schedule that governs three Seattle Department of Transportation bridges: the Ballard Bridge (LLNR 18180), mile 1.1, the Fremont Bridge (LLNR 18182), mile 2.6, and the University Bridge (LLNR 18235), mile 4.3,all crossing the Lake Washington Ship Canal in Seattle, WA. The deviation is necessary to accommodate highway traffic during the closure of the Alaskan Way Viaduct and prior to opening the SR-99 Tunnel. This deviation authorizes the three subject bridges to not open to marine vessels, less than 1000 tons, unless the vessel has in tow a vessel of 1000 or more gross tons, from 0001 on 11 Jan 2019 to 2359 on 09 Feb 2019. The hours to not open the three subject bridges to marine vessels are from 0700 to 1000 and from 1530 to 1900 seven days per week.

New Recycling Program at Shilshole

As a boater, we are very much in touch with, and aware of, our surroundings and do our best to boat and live in an environmentally responsible way.  Most of us do a great job of separating our glass/paper/plastic/organics from the regular garbage.  The Port has always encouraged us to recycle and they provide clear signage near the dumpster of how to sort.   It’s the right thing to do!

Now we have a new service company called Ridwell to supplement the Port’s program.  This company collects… Continue reading
