Notes from Marina Security Meeting 11-9-16

Here is a summary of last week’s security meeting…

The purpose of the meeting was to update the marina tenants and upland residents on the recent security concerns affecting our area.  There were about 60 attendees, along with Port of Seattle Police, the POS Head of Security, POS Maritime Director, and Shilshole staff.  The contract security firm that patrols in the evening was also there.

Commander Bill McAteer, POS Police: Two police officers cover the seaport properties and work in close partnership with the Seattle Police Dept. and the Burlington Northern Police. As always, call 911 for any emergencies and state you are at Shilshole Marina.  Call 206-787-5401 for any non-emergency response (suspicious persons, non-threatening criminal activity).  The Port of Seattle Police will respond much quicker than Seattle PD, will take your statement and follow-up with you.  Continue reading

The Vendée Globe starts Sunday Nov 6th

80 days around the world alone, no stops, and this year they have foiling boats! You can download the free ap to follow.

The Vendée Globe is the hardest and most famous sailing race in the world. Nicknamed the Everest of the Seas, it involves sailing around the world alone, without stopping and without assistance, setting sail from and finishing in Les Sables d’Olonne, after rounding the three legendary capes: The Cape of Good Hope in South Africa, Cape Leeuwin in Southern Australia and the infamous Cape Horn at the tip of South America. They therefore have to sail twice in the North and South Atlantic – on the way down and on the way back – and sail around Antarctica by crossing the Indian Ocean and the huge Pacific. Like other major international sporting events (the Olympics, World Cup, etc) it has been organised every four years since 1989.

Chantey Sing at Shilshole Marina

Sea Chanteys and other maritime music celebrate our connections to the sea, boats, and those who sail them.  They include work songs and foc’sle ditties with great choruses that tie our present day maritime traditions and lore to those of the past. The call-and-response form makes these songs easy to learn and fun to sing for adults and children alike. Come and lead a song of the sea or just join in on the chorus.

Race Your House! Sat, Oct 22nd

Here’s the opportunity for liveaboards to take their “house” for a spin around the race course!  It is a simple course…usually a short windward from Shilshole to Westpoint, a beam reach to Bainbridge and back with a turn around Meadow Point-shorter if the wind is light.  Its fun, free and laid back (no protests or aggressive confrontation).  Just follow basic sailing rules of the road.

There is a great party the night before to get the details of the race and to get to know your “competition”.

To register and get details, please go to the STYC web page.

Shilshole Community Meeting 9-28-16 Notes…

Last night’s meeting was held at the CYC clubhouse with nearly 100 marina tenants-thanks to all who attended!  Also there was the marina office staff, along with Lindsay Pulsifer, Director of Port of Seattle Maritime Div., and Mark Longridge, Seaport Project Manager.  Illustrations of the restrooms’ design were displayed (and will be available on the Port of Seattle website). The purpose of the meeting was to update the tenants on the status of the Shilshole restroom/laundry buildings, paid parking for non-permit areas, and a potential new, on-site restaurant.

Restaurant: A request for proposal (RFP) was sent out and Dukes Chowder House was selected to be the restaurant that will be located where the current lawn and garden are now.  Their lease needs to go before the Port Commission meeting in Dec for approval.  No estimate yet as to buildout time/completion.

Restrooms/Laundry-Mark Longridge: the original plan presented to the tenants last year has been updated to include a 2nd story on 2 of the 3 new buildings. Key FOB strikes determined the usage and planning. Further details of the design will be available in early 2017. The 2nd story will be leased to marine oriented businesses.  The buildings will be approximately 3000 sq. feet (the current restrooms are 650-750 sq. feet.).

The buildings will include: restrooms/showers with slightly more fixtures than currently, men’s and women’s sides, individual key FOB entrances; laundry-doubling the number of units and will be both quarters and smartphone paid. There will be stacked washers and dryers with a folding table, and laundry cart; 2 stairwells and an elevator for the upstairs tenants; solar panels, bike storage, security lights and cameras, and garbage/recycle nearby. Construction will begin in the winter of 2017, to be completed by spring 2018.  The marina staff will be moved to one of the 2nd story spaces and the main marina building office area will be repurposed for retail.  All questions can be submitted to the Project Design team at  Shilshole Outreach

Parking-Tracy:  The Port of Seattle is looking for ways to raise revenue and paid parking is one option. But any changes have been postposed for 12-18 months until the impact of the construction, restaurant and retail space has been reviewed. Repaving will take place at that time.

Tenants will continue to receive 1 free parking pass and there will be a fee for the 2nd pass-that amount will be reviewed in Nov.  Future parking proposals for both revenue and security include possibly closing off the parking lot and have a vendor handle the paid parking.
