Dock Captains/Port Quarterly Mtg. Notes
This past Wednesday was our quarterly Dock Captain meeting with the Port where we have an opportunity to hear the latest updates from the Port regarding security, construction, proposed changes, and any other issues concerning Shilshole Marina.
Are You Prepared?
Here’s another example of how we, as boaters, should be prepared for the unexpected. Last weekend, there was a fire with extensive damage to the south end electrical vault. This shut down power to A-E docks. The Port was quick to react to get generators to the marina as backup and notify those of us affected (thank you Darrel).
What is your plan? A power outage, a landslide blocking entrances, an oil spill from the train, a tsunami…all are unexpected, and all will affect your boat-whether you are liveaboard or not. Take a few moments to think about how this would affect you and your family and please review some resources that we have at Shilshole Prepares.

Get to Know Your Dock Captain
Every dock at Shilshole has a liveaboard tenant that has been designated “Dock Captain”. This person is in good standing with the Port and acts a liaison between their respective docks and the Port/Marina staff.
The dock captain is required to be familiar with the Shilshole Handbook and Required Best Management Practices and is your go-to person with questions about hazmat waste disposal, pumpout, marina rules, etc. They also walk your dock to check on boats during inclement weather. They are not dock police!
Their name and contact information are posted on the gate’s inside bulletin board, and if you haven’t done so already, please introduce yourself to them!

Some Reminders…
- The Port has a great haz-mat recycling program! Just call the 24/7 cell to have them meet you so they can dispose of your items:
- Only used oil, diesel and hydraulic fluid goes in tank near restroom M2;
- Used batteries, old gasoline/mix, and antifreeze/coolant go to the Hazmat Box down near Seaview Boatyard (south)
- Garbage goes in the dark green waste container, all recycling goes in the large blue container. Compost in the brown plastic bin.
- Please put your donated “junk” (items you no longer need but don’t want to toss) near the dumpster and not at the gate, so more people can see them.
- Remind your guests and crew to park on the outer row near the street in General Parking. The Port will tow all vehicles that are parked in Permit Parking that don’t have a 2021 sticker.
- Please control your dogs (by your side or on a leash at all times) and please clean up after them!
- To avoid smash and grab car break-ins, do not leave any items visible in your car.
- Do not allow people you don’t know through the gate (tailgaters). Have them call the Port number posted on the gate for access. There have been prowlers on the docks and in the waterways so please lock your boat, dinghy, etc and please call the Port’s 24/7 cell phone, 206-601-4089, if you see anything/anyone suspicious.
Thank you for helping keep this a nice place to moor and live!
