Happy New Year-Finally!

This past year has brought many challenges for all of us.  Our thoughts and prayers go out to those who know someone that has lost the battle with this terrible disease.  For the small businesses that have continued to struggle, may you persevere with the hope that the new year brings you a better tomorrow.

No matter the challenges to come, we are what we make it!  Be a better person: be patient, smile more, help those in need, and support your neighbors.

“It is not in the stars to hold our destiny but in ourselves.” —William Shakespeare

Your Shilshole Liveaboard Assoc.
wishes you and your family good health,
prosperity, and peace in 2021!

Do you know what to do when this happens?

It’s Christmastime-a time for peace, family, and good feelings.  But, unfortunately, life can get in the way-we’ve spent 9 months with the CoVid and now we have this reminder…

This just happened today (Tues Dec 22nd) Train carrying crude oil derails, catches fire in Whatcom County (mynorthwest.com)

We have tracks right next to the marina with 50+ trains per day and a big curve at Golden Gardens.  Very long oil and coal trains transit our neighborhood. These wont go away as this is a major corridor of commerce, but…

Area you prepared?  Can you leave your slip on a moments notice?  Do your children know the procedure?  We’ve talked about this for years on this Blog with Shilshole Prepares and it is why we do our prep, our V-Man communication, and have regular discussion about this.

Put it on your list to discuss with your family in the new year.

Miris at Golden Gardens

from Shilshole Sheri…

Last Friday we ordered a dinner for four with our friends, at 6’ apart of course. Brisket Kebobs with a wonderful fresh Greek salad, rice and a very smooth and creamy hummus. Next time we’ll have to try the chicken. Everything was so tasty and served hot. Not to mention very ample portions too, so much that both couples were able to have some left overs. Which, I might add, were just as tasty on day two. Sweet Miri hand delivered the meal to the boat and with a smile, turned and ran off, no doubt to deliver more wonderful meals to other eagerly waiting appetites on other boats. You should take part in her food delivery, you’ll be glad you did.

Orcas in Puget Sound

We have the incredible benefit of having these beautiful creatures right here in our own back yard!  With summer boating in high gear, your chance of an encounter with them is pretty good but please, be a good boater and respect the laws regarding distance and speed.  They are in place to protect the orca’s feeding, echolocation and travel.  Many are also pregnant now and their survival rates are low.

Washington State Law

  • Boats to stay 300 yards from Southern Resident orcas or killer whales on either side.
  • Boats to stay 400 yards out of Southern Resident orca’s path/in front and behind the whales
  • Boats to go slow (<7 knots) within ½ mile of Southern Resident orcas
  • Disengage engines if whales appear within 300 yards.

Boats to stay 100 yards from all other marine mammals (e.g. humpback whales, gray whales, sea lions and seals).

You’ve seen the flyers on the gates and at boat ramps:  Be Whale Wise outlines the rules and no-boat zones.

You can also report sightings and get information at the Orca Network.

Parking Issues at Shilshole

As we know, the parking has been a mess here at Shilshole.  With the Mayor’s continued closure of the Golden Gardens parking lot and Golden Gardens Drive, the overflow has adversely affected us here in the marina.  The marina manager, Jo, and operations supv., Dale, have added extra security at the north end, have closed off several entrances and are working hard to finalize the ticketing and towing of illegally parked vehicles in our lot.  Unfortunately, it is delayed at the Port of Seattle main office and needs our input to facilitate the approval.  Here is the contact info of the Port of Seattle Commissioners.
