Volunteer need to head up the Live Aboard Tour National Marina Day June 10, 2017

For the last two years the crew of S/V Bristol Blue (Ned Kohlhauff and Kristen Sierra) has headed up this activity. Due to several other commitments they will not be available to this year.

This event is sponsored by the Shilshole LiveAboard Association. If you live on a boat here a Shilshole Marina you are a member. The tour consists of volunteers that are willing to show their boats to the general public 12 noon to 4 pm on June 10 2017. Rounding up 3-4 other liveaboard boats to participate in the tour is the primary responsibility of the tour volunteer. Attending a couple of meetings with the Port of Seattle staff involved with putting on this event and getting the other tour volunteers to sign a release of harm document for each boat is also included.

If you are interesting in volunteering for this event you can call or email Kristen Sierra 206-890-5756 amazonred53@gmail.com

Ballard Bicycle Missing Link Final

The final route for the long debated “missing link” of the Burke Gilman Trail has been chosen. This proposed trail would run along Market Street between the Ballard Locks and 24th Avenue Northwest, then turn on to Shilshole Avenue Northwest and run along the south-side of the street. The existing trail east of the Ballard Bridge, along Northwest 45th Street, will be improved to allow for better access for businesses and safer travel for bicyclists and pedestrians.

“No-Discharge Zone” for Puget Sound

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has issued a final affirmative determination that adequate sewage pump-out facilities are available for recreational and commercial vessels to support the Washington Department of Ecology’s proposed “No-Discharge Zone” for Puget Sound.

Ecology has proposed to establish a “No-Discharge Zone” for Puget Sound which would prohibit the discharge of vessel sewage – both treated and untreated – into Puget Sound waters. Ecology’s petition concluded that there is sufficient need for establishing a No-Discharge Zone to protect water quality and the related ecological, economic, and recreational benefits provided by Puget Sound. Rocks being thrown at cars in marina

Last Thur, someone was throwing rocks from the train tracks down into the parking lot at the north end of the marina.  According to marina security, several cars were damaged…some quite severely (approx. $10,000).   There was a large police response to this incident-both City and Port, but the person got away.  Burlington Northern will also respond to any activity on their tracks.

If you ever see/experience something like this..please say something!

West Point Sewer Treatment plant Malfunction

courtesy seattletimes.com

With all the rain we had this past week, the combined sewer/rain water overflow maxed out the West Point treatment plant and was released untreated into Puget Sound.  The plant is currently operating at 50% capacity and may do so for a couple months.  Obviously, it’s best to avoid water sports like swimming/paddle boarding. Good thing crabbing season is still 6 months away! read these links for more details…

..and they blame boaters for pollution!
