Rainy day at the Laundry…..

No one likes doing laundry.  I do not like it, but I have found that it is,  worth the trip to Kirkland to do it. The place I usually go is clean, machines work well and the owner or a family member is there all the time.  Today I could not make the trek so I gathered up the laundry & soap and headed to our marina laundry.  I was the only one there at the time I arrived and used all but two of the washers. I drove back to the boat to get stuff I had forgotten and made it back before the wash cycle was finished.

Did I mention that the Port of Seattle electrician was working at replacing ballasts for all the lighting fixtures in the laundry.  His name was Alex.  What a thoroughly pleasant fellow.  He did his work efficiently and conscientiously, working around those of us that had showed up.  He made the lights work!!!! Have not seen that much light in there since June.

By the time I was finished drying my laundry there were 5 other boaters doing their laundry including a real estate gentleman, looking for a new boat that can handle blue water;  a woman who is a writer who appreciates the environment that we live in here at the marina, animals included, and an enthusiastic young man who is a doctor, with a Bavaria 37.  He  had wonderful things to say about the world he sees for the people on our planet.   Two other folks that I did not get to talk to, sadly.

The laundry was not clean and until Alex fixed the lights it was dark.  The washing machines did not wring the clothes dry, the dryers took over and hour to dry the clothes but the best part of the experience was the people that came in and out.  Generally, I spend hours commuting to Kirkland and back and $30 to $40 dollars, every two weeks.  I want to believe that that having 50 more liveaboards is a good thing.  That we can work around the facilities overload. That the designs for the new generation of laundries and bathrooms will solve the problems we have as residents of this marina.  I want to believe that we will have a place to fold our clothes and a place to wait, that is clean and bright. As I said before I want to believe……after all this is the season of miracles, Santa Claus and good will to all!

Thank you Ned for editing this piece!

Last Chance to take the Survey

If you have not taken the survey the Port of Seattle has been running to get feed back on the new bathroom facilities you might want to do it soon.  I just received a notice that it will draw to a close soon.

Here are the links you were looking for….

Don’t get me wrong……

There is a difference between liking/supporting  an organization and supporting all the policies of that organization.  I personally find the work that the Port of Seattle does to be remarkable.  The organization makes it possible for our City to have a world class shipping port and an airport that rivals  the best in the country.  Growth requires change and some alteration in policies.

With all due respect to the Port of Seattle, I do have some strong disagreements with recent changes regarding live aboard customers and non live aboard customers of Shilshole Bay Marina.

  • The agreement between the Live Aboard community and the Port of Seattle is being disregarded by the Port with regard to the new policy of charging the new live aboard  customers $ 100.oo per-month.  This is a policy change I do not support.
  • Charging “A fee of  $240.00 plus tax sales tax” for an additional vehicle/or a replacement sticker is a policy change that I find outrageous.  Raising the fee from $70.00 to $240.00 is an increase of 342%.
  • An increase of 8% in slip fees over a period less than one year is unthinkable.
  •  The leasehold tax has also been raised.    (please read the comment section concerning the Leasehold Tax, thanks Al for the clarification)
  • Reduction of parking spaces of customers at the SBM to provide additional income to the Port is also a policy change, which I do not support.

It has been said to me by others, that expressing my views on these policy changes can be seen as being “anti-port” rhetoric, and not in the spirit or word of the Live Aboard agreement between the Port of Seattle, this causes me to ask myself,” am I not a customer of this marina and am I not paying for these changes in Port policies? Then why should I be silent in the face of outrageous hikes in fees and reduction of parking by the Port, if indeed these policies impact me and my family in an adverse way?”  I have heard comments from numerous members of the boating community express these concerns with vigor. Putting my name on these concerns and posting my concerns for the changes in policies has caused me to do a bit of a reality check.  Am I not entitled to express my thoughts without fear of retribution for my opinions?

As I have stated above,  I support the Port of Seattle efforts to improve the services at its various operations.  I do not support the way we here at Shishole Bay Marina are being “handled”.

I approve this message and invite alternative views on this subject.

Lights and Christmas Spray of Evergreen

On our recent return from a Spokane visiting to the grand kids, the first thing we saw was the colored lights on several boats.  It warmed our hearts….

This time of year can be hard.  Having the boats lighted seems to raise our moral.  It is great!  To add to the charm someone tied an evergreen wreath, complete with red ribbon and holly, to the fence near D/E Dock gate.  It is a wonderful addition to the otherwise winter drabs.

Here is to the  Season!!
