Unfortunately, we knew this was bound to happen:  Lake Union, Poulsbo, Everett, Bremerton, and Tacoma have cancelled their Fireworks and 4th of July Celebrations this year.  Here are their sites:

Vessel COD and Registration Renewal

It’s that time of the year for most of us…renewing your federal documentation and your state registration.  The official US Dept of Homeland Security/USCG site is National Vessel Documentation Center (NVDC)

The renewal tab is on the left side of the page which will take you to the Pay.gov site where you can renew and pay online.

All motorized recreational vessels (boats and dinghies) on Washington State federally controlled waters (Puget Sound, Lake Union, Lake Washington and all waterways attached to them) are required to be registered .  You must display the numbers and decal if not documented, and the decal only if documented.  All current year registration expires June 30th.  These too, can be ordered online and either be mailed to you or picked up at Ballard Licensing.

The one exception: Tenders 10 HP or less used for direct transportation between a registered vessel and the shore and for no other purpose. The tender must display the number of the registered vessel followed by the suffix “1”. (to and from shore means no crabbing, visiting another vessel, or driving around-we’ve had neighbors in the marina get fined for this so its not worth the risk)

Boating During COVID-19

As boaters, and especially liveaboards, Puget Sound IS our backyard and boats, by pure physics, can not occupy the same space.  If you or your household are the only ones on your boat…get out there and enjoy our great Spring weather!  With the easing of recreational restrictions next week, state parks will be open for day use (like Blake Is, but check their site for details).  No overnight camping is allowed yet, which will include docks and buoys…but that’s what your anchor is for!  Respect the neighbors in Blakely Harbor, Manzanita Bay, Port Madison, etc….don’t go ashore.  If you need to go to a marina, call them first to confirm their schedule and services. (The San Juan’s are still closed)

Here is a great article on how to keep your boat safe during the current crisis..

Updated Shilshole Procedures/Closures

Shilshole tenants just received this notice via email which will help explain the closure of some of the parking lot entrances and the plaza, etc….

From the marina staff..

We all want go get outside on these nice days, but according to the governor: “If you need to take a car, it’s probably too far. Don’t recreate with those outside your household. Practice strong social distancing and stay at least 6-feet apart when getting fresh air.”

We are immediately implementing the following measures at SBM to support Governor Jay Inslee’s “Stay Home, Stay Healthy” emergency order.

• Continuing to clean all public areas two times a day.
• Non-liveaboard moorage customers should only visit SBM if your trip is essential.
• Closing public access to the A-Pier and X Dock.
• Placing partial restrictions on access to the parking lot. All vehicle entrances and exits will remain locked except for those immediately north and south of the SBM main building.
• Controlling pedestrian access to the SBM promenade.
• Limiting access to picnic tables and benches along the pedestrian thoroughfare.
• Closing public restrooms at SBM promenade.

Operational staff are on-site and can assist with normal operational requests. Please be patient with staff members as we exercise critical measures of social distancing. Thank you for your patience in this challenging time.

Security on your dock…

During these challenging times, there are many people down from the city to get some fresh air, walk the boardwalk and check out the boats.  Some will tailgate onto the docks.  Many non-resident tenants have also come down to their boats lately to spend some time.

As liveaboard residents it is incumbent upon us to “know our neighbors”. When you see someone “new” on the dock-especially if they are “just looking around”…be it guests of a neighbor or new tenants, introduce yourself and ask them “how can I help you?”, “who are you looking for?”. Financial Relief for Shilshole Tenants

Here’s the email to the marina tenants from the Port of Seattle-Shilshole…

Dear Marina Moorage Customer:
On April 1, 2020, the Port of Seattle Commission proclaimed that tenants and residents at Port of Seattle facilities shall not be evicted for inability to pay rent through June 30, 2020, including live-aboard residents and other moorage customers, and authorized the Executive Director to provide financial relief to these residents and customers consistent with motion 2020-07. Marina parking lot paving project

From the Shilshole Marina office…

Shilshole Bay Marina’s Customer Service Facilities project is entering the phase in which the marina’s parking lots will undergo grading and drainage improvements as well as an asphalt overlay. This seven-phase project recently started in our north parking lot and will eventually encompass most of the Shilshole’s lots, most with paving dating back to Shilshole’s inception in the 60’s. The one area that is not being repaved is the parking lot immediately south of the marina office. The last section to be repaved will be done near the end of June. Continue reading
